Treatise 1553 Italian Italy

Camillo Agrippa

Principal Roman edition of Camillo Agrippa's Trattato di scientia d'arme, printed in 1553 and foundational to later rapier theory. Castle also records the Roman 1553 witness with portrait and fifty-five copperplates. Vigeant 1882 treats Agrippa as one of the most remarkable early masters of fencing, stresses the long predominance of the Italian school that followed him, and notes both the dedication to Cosimo de' Medici and old catalogue traditions connecting some engravings with Michelangelo.
