Gelli praises the work as a clear and important early manual and credits Dall'Agocchie with helping popularize thrust-oriented play. Vigeant 1882 preserves the fuller three-book framing on fencing, jousting, and the ordering of battles, and remarks that the dialogue-form discussion would have been even more appreciated had it been accompanied by explanatory plates.
