Schools and Masters of Fence, from the Middle Ages to the Eighteenth Century

Bibliography 1885 English United Kingdom

Egerton Castle

Reference note reviewed on August 7, 2026. This work represents the first edition published in London by George Bell & Sons in 1885, not the revised edition of 1892. It should be kept distinct from work 669, which represents the substantially revised and enlarged 1892 edition. Earlier imported OCR text and the year 1884 were corrected from supplied bibliographic research.

Gelli gives an expanded appreciative description of the 1885 first edition, noting the etched frontispiece, two-colour title, 121 illustrations, six carbon plates, and the importance of the bibliography.
