Gran simulacro dell'arte e dell'uso della scherma

Treatise 1610 Italian Italy

Ridolfo Capoferro

Important Italian fencing treatise by Ridolfo Capoferro da Cagli, printed at Siena in 1610. Gelli describes the richly illustrated edition in detail and separately notes, without identifying a surviving imprint, the possible existence of an earlier edition.

Castle also records the Siena 1610 Capoferro witness with Schiaminossi plates.

Vigeant 1882 independently confirms the 1610 Siena witness and the full dedication to Federigo Feltrio della Rovere; the descriptive continuation of the notice continues on the next page block.

Vigeant 1882 continues the Capoferro notice with the oblong quarto format, the arms of the duke of Urbino, the master portrait as a second frontispiece, and 43 copper engravings by Rafael Schiamirossi. He also reports a later edition known only from fragments, with more ornamented engravings, and treats Capoferro as one of the principal Italian fencing authors.
