Achille Marozzo

Early Venetian witness of Achille Marozzo's Opera nova, dated 1517 and highlighted by Gelli as a major bibliographic discovery. Earlier local ingestion had mixed 1517 and 1536 evidence into one record; this normalization anchors the present record explicitly to the 1517 Venetian edition.

Gelli records a 1568 state within the Marozzo Opera nova family.

Castle treats the 1536, 1550, and 1568 Marozzo states as witnesses within the same Opera nova family.

Vigeant 1882 also records the Modena 1536 Marozzo witness within the broader Opera nova family, describing its 82 repeated woodcut plates and treating Marozzo as the first author to write on fencing in a substantially defined way.

Quality phase 190: the former 1517 work was a bibliographic phantom caused by alteration of MDLXVII in a composite Pisa copy. Works 2444–2447 were edition-fragments and are consolidated here; the genuine sequence represented locally is 1536, 1550, 1568 and 1615.

Gelli describes the Venetian 1517 edition, published by the heirs of Marchio Sessa, as comprising 181 leaves with plates similar to those of the Modena edition. The prior local Thimm-based import note had conflated this witness with later Marozzo edition data.

Vigeant 1882, pp. 89-90: same-family reference to the Modena 1536 witness, with woodcut frontispiece, 82 woodcut plates, and dedication. Vigeant stresses Marozzo's foundational importance and the later dependence of other authors on him.

Quality phase 101a: physical extent recovered from the existing bibliographic note.

Quality phase 190: rebuilt from the false 1517 shell as the genuine Modena 1536 first edition. The alleged 1517 witness was an altered/composite later copy, not a publication.

Gelli identifies the 1550 Venetian issue, printed by Gioanne Padouano at the instance of Melchior Sessa, as an exact reproduction of the Modena edition.

Vigeant 1882, p. 90: Venice, printed by Gioanne Padouano at the instance of Marchior Sessa, 1550. Vigeant says this second edition reproduces the first exactly.

Gelli describes the 1568 Pinargenti edition as a splendid Venetian reissue with 10 unnumbered pages, 194 numbered pages, and 26 copperplates, not a separate work by Sebastiano Marozzo.

Vigeant 1882, p. 91: Venice, A. Pinargenti, 1568. Fourth edition, corrected and ornamented with new copper figures in the text, with dedication by the painter Giulio Fontana to Don Giovanni Manriche. Vigeant insists this is a true fourth edition of the earlier Marozzo book, not a separate filial work.

Quality phase 101a: physical extent recovered from the existing bibliographic note.

Quality phase 190: consolidated duplicate former edition 2454.

Source pages: 211. Bracketed notes: ["76figures, out oftext."]

Vigeant 1882, p. 90: undated and place-less third edition, approximately 1568, repeating the frontispiece and woodcut plates of the first two editions but with different typography.
