Gelli treats Gomard as one of the more practical French writers on fencing and notes the desirability of the 1845 edition. The Gelli witness belongs to this substantive Possellier dit Gomard work, not to the older thin Possellier shell elsewhere in the catalogue.
Vigeant 1882 places Gomard among the French authors who most clearly established modern fencing principles and improved its teaching. He values especially the retrospective review of earlier fencing literature included in the book, calling that chapter unique and precious for the French school.
