La noble science des joueurs d'espee

Treatise 1538 French Belgium

PAURNFEINDT

French printed translation of the Paurnfeindt tradition, issued at Antwerp by Guillaume Vasterman in 1538. Modern scholarship confirms this as a real printed fight-book witness rather than a mere reference note.

Castle records the anonymous French tradition in two closely related sixteenth-century states: a Paris witness read as 1533 (?) and an Antwerp witness read as 1535 or 1538. The catalogue keeps a single work record for this publication family. Phase 87: edition represented by former work 1701 was individually verified and consolidated here.

Anvers, 1538, imprime par Guillaume Vasterman. Gelli notes 33 woodcuts and treats the book as technically weak but important for the transmission of Spanish fencing in Flanders.

The 1533? date and divergent woodcut counts in legacy notes are retained as source conflicts, not asserted as manifestation facts. The academic census identifies one Antwerp printing by Willem Vorsterman in 1538.

Duplicate manifestation 1629 consolidated in quality phase 151 (2026-08-15). Alternate imported title: NOBLE SCIENCE des joueursd'espée. Preserved source note: Source pages: 238. Bracketed notes: ["1533?", "This is thefirstknown FrenchworkofFence, andis curiouslyenoughshown tobeatranslationfromtheGermanofPaurnfeindt.", "Icicommence untrès beau livret, contenant la chevaleureuse science desjoueursd'espée,pour apprendreàjouerdel'espéeàdeuxmainsetaultressemblablesespées, avecaussilesbraquemarset aultrescourtscousteauxlesquelslonuse àunemain .", "Blackletter. 14whole-pageand12half-pagewoodcuts.", "PAURNFEINDT(A.)"]
