Traité de l'art de faire des armes

Treatise 1820 French France

Louis-Justin Lafaugère

L-block staging entry validated for model fit. Imported from staging batch duell-thimm-l, source entry 1181. [2026-07-18 editorial enrichment: authority normalized to full personal name.]

Gelli confirms that the 1820 Lyon treatise, the 1825 Paris issue with portrait, and the Roret manual witness he explicitly places in 1838 belong to one Lafaugere work family. The catalogue therefore consolidates these edition shells under a single work record rather than exposing multiple public works for the same treatise tradition.

Vigeant 1882 presents the 1820 Lyon Lafaugere treatise as a distinctive and highly personal method, remarkable for its difficult hand displacements and point-work, even if not easily imitated by ordinary students.

Lyon, 1820. Gelli confirms the original Lafaugere treatise with two folding plates, the dedication to the baron d'Ivry, and the notice historique.

Vigeant 1882, pp. 78-79: Lyon, 1820. Sold by the author, rue Mulet no. 22, at 6 francs. In-8vo with two folding outline plates, dedication to the baron d'Ivry, and a historical notice; Vigeant stresses the highly personal and difficult method.

Quality phase 289: The exact 1820 references agree on an author portrait and do not identify an instructional plate suite.

Quality phase 311: the exact 1820 Lyon manifestation is published chez l’auteur. BnF data confirms Lyon, 1820 and its 370-page catalogue description; Google Books and a university study independently identify chez l’auteur. The conflicting 271-page Google display is retained as evidence but does not override the BnF collation.

Cover retrieved from the official BnF/Gallica service in phase 638 (bpt6k1095527k); visually checked against the linked manifestation and validated at 600×928 pixels.

Duplicate 1825 shell imported from Biblioteca do Desporto / IPDJ. Moved under the consolidated Lafaugere work family rather than kept as a separate public work.

Quality phase 101p: manifestation label added to distinguish a legitimate same-year state.

Garnier is recorded as publisher/bookseller and Bouchard as printer; the former separate rows represented the same 1825 manifestation.

Duplicate manifestation 1409 consolidated in quality phase 151 (2026-08-15). Alternate imported title: Traité de l'art de faire des armes — Bouchard issue. Preserved source note: Paris, 1825, imprimerie Bouchart. Gelli says this second reprint differs from the 1820 witness chiefly by the author's portrait.

Vigeant 1882, p. 79: a second edition of the Lafaugere treatise was printed at Paris in 1825 by Bouchard, with a military portrait of the author.

Quality phase 101p: manifestation label added to distinguish a legitimate same-year state.

Paris, 1884, Roret. This later refondue Roret witness remains within the broader Lafaugere treatise family; Gelli's page in the current batch explicitly points back to the earlier same-family Roret line of 1838.

Quality phase 477: Thimm confirms figures in the text but gives no safe count.
