Nouveau traite de la perfection sur le fait des armes

Book 1736 French France

Pierre-Jacques-François Girard

G-block staging entry validated for model fit. Imported from staging batch duell-thimm-g, source entry 890.

The Gelli witness confirms that the 1736, 1736-1737, 1740, and 1755 Girard issues belong to one work family. The catalogue therefore carries them as edition history under a single work record rather than exposing separate public works for the same fencing treatise.

Castle also records the Paris 1736-1737 Girard witness.

Vigeant 1882 describes the 1736-1737 original Girard issue as having two title states, one without frontispiece and another with a copper frontispiece by Herblot dated 1736 followed by a title dated 1737; he also notes the portrait by Jacques de Favanne, 116 copper engravings outside the text, and the careful printing and ornaments that make the original bibliographically desirable. He then records the 1740 Hague reissue under the title Academie de l homme d epee, without frontispiece, and a third Hague edition of 1755 similar to the second.

Paris, 1736-1737. Gelli distinguishes a first edition of 1736 and a second issue with the double date 1736-1737. The same work family also continued at La Haye under Pierre de Hondt in 1740 with the title Academie de l'homme d'epee and in 1755 as a later Hague issue.

Vigeant 1882, pp. 63-64: Paris, 1736. Oblong 4to with two different title states in the original issue, one with no frontispiece and another with a copper frontispiece by Herblot dated 1736 followed by a title dated 1737; portrait of the author engraved by Jacques de Favanne; 116 copper engravings outside the text; preface, avertissement, and Au lecteur.

Quality phase 103c: the Getty Research Institute copy of the 1736 Paris edition was confirmed at [6], 156, [4] pages with 116 [i.e. 117] leaves of plates, in quarto.

La Haye, Pierre de Hondt, 1740. Gelli treats this as the third edition in the same Girard work family and gives the title Academie de l'homme d'epee. The 1755 Hague issue belongs to the same family and is preserved in work-level notes and bibliography references.

Vigeant 1882, p. 64: La Haye, chez Pierre de Hondt, 1740. Reprint conforming to the original, but with the frontispiece suppressed and the title changed to Academie de l homme d epee.

Quality phase 104: the exact 1740 Hague title confirms 116 plans; pagination remains unrecorded because the 1736 collation was not transferred to this reissue.
