British author, antiquarian, swordsman, and one of the most influential Victorian historians of fencing. His `Schools and Masters of Fence` became a classic reference work for the historical study of European swordsmanship and helped shape modern antiquarian and early reconstruction interest in historical fencing.
He was also active in competitive fencing culture and served as a referee and team official in Olympic-era fencing.
