Italy 1530 - 1606mid to late 16th century

Italian physician, classicist, and university scholar whose `De arte gymnastica` is a landmark in the study of ancient exercise, bodily culture, and physical training. Although not a fencing master in the narrow sense, Mercuriale is essential to the history of martial and athletic literature because his work linked humanist medicine, classical antiquity, and physical exercise in one of the most influential learned treatises of the Renaissance.
