Henri de Sainct-Didier

French gentleman of Provence and one of the foundational printed authors of French fencing literature. He is chiefly important as the author of the first known French fencing treatise, published in 1573 and dedicated to Charles IX, which marks an early stage in the institutional and literary formation of the French school of arms.

Jean Froissart

Medieval French chronicler, poet, and historian whose `Chroniques` are among the major narrative sources for chivalric culture, warfare, arms, and knightly conduct in the later Middle Ages. Within this database he is important less as a technical martial author than as a foundational witness to the social and literary world in which combat, honour, and arms display were understood.
